James McMurtry

With a reputation for being one of the finest lyricists around, James McMurtry crafts his songs with such clarity and precision that makes him stand in a class all in his own. Since his 1989 debut ‘Too Long In The Wasteland’ (produced by John Mellencamp), McMurtry has maintained his uncompromising vision and vivid storytelling to much acclaim throughout his career. Not one to rest on his laurels, McMurtry is constantly touring. 'The Washington Post' noted his live prowess: "Much attention is paid to James McMurtry's lyrics, and rightfully so: He creates a novel's worth of emotion and experience in four minutes of blisteringly stark couplets.”

February 2015 brings a new full-length from James McMurtry. Recorded and produced in New Orleans with producer CC Adcock, the Texan songwriter brings a fresh perspective to the studio exploring more expansive instrumentation and arrangements while retaining a sharp focus on his masterful guitar work and his poetic storytelling style.

"The simple fact is that James McMurtry may be the truest, fiercest songwriter of his generation..."
- Stephen King | Entertainment Weekly

“A really satisfying collection.”  —Ken Tucker, NPR Fresh Air

“In many people’s opinion, McMurtry is the best American songwriter currently working.” — The New Yorker

"The Texas troubadour son of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Larry McMurtry, he is a highly regarded scribe in his own right, of sharply wrought songs, laced with humor and vividly drawn characters.”
— Wall Street Journal

"While McMurtry weaves social commentary throughout the dozen tracks on Complicated Game, he is more focused on presenting vignettes about the common man, some of which come from his own experiences, and some that he's pieced together from things he's read or observed."
- Rolling Stone

“Fuses wry, literate observations about the world with the snarl of barroom rock. The result is at times sardonic, subversive and funny, but often vulnerable and always poignant.”
- NPR Mountain Stage

"Complicated Game isn’t complicated, nor is it a game. What it is is a straight-ahead study in how hard life can be, no matter what the past might predict, and where some sunshine can be found.”
- Morton Report

"While Mr. McMurtry has rarely shied away from writing a damning protest song, this song cycle largely focuses on love songs — in both the doting and defiant varieties.”
- The New York Times (Texas Edition)
